Big Bear: Pine Knot Trail

Big Bear in the fall is absolutely beautiful! This is especially true for those of us who live in San Diego where fall colors are generally limited to the changing holiday decorations.

We drove the 3 hours up to Big Bear on Saturday to go hiking and see the fall colors before the snow comes. Generally, I would prefer to stay for the weekend, it is a LONG drive from San Diego. That said, the 6-hour round trip was well worth it. We hiked the Pine Knot Trail, which begins at the Aspen Glen Picnic area. The trail is intermediate difficulty, and has a lot of climbs and descents. We took the trail to Grand View Point, it was a beautiful hike - lots of fall colors, pine trees, and vistas over Big Bear Lake and the surrounding area.

We've gone up to Big Bear in October every year for the past three years, but this is the first year we have gone up so late in the month. The fall colors were better this year than the previous two, and the weather was beautifully mild, so next year we are planning to go up the third weekend in October again. We have hiked several trails up in Big Bear, and I'm so glad we decided to explore a bit and try one we hadn't done before because Pine Knot is now one of my favorites.
