A Word About This Blog
Hiking is our passion. There is no other way we would prefer to spend a Saturday (or any other day).
My husband, David and I started hiking in 2011. We began
hiking as a way to lose weight. Both of us were obese and we were
looking for ways to exercise that would be enjoyable. We started by walking for
45 minutes and we kept challenging ourselves to go farther and hike more
challenging trails. We started making a list of trails and hikes we
wanted to do. Six years and over 100 pounds lost, each, we have hiked in places
like the Ring of Kerry in Ireland, the French Alps, Yosemite, the Rockies,
British Columbia, Mt. Ranier, the Anza Borrego desert, Joshua Tree, and many more amazing and extraordinarily beautiful places. We’ve
started “peak bagging” – We’ve hiked to the peaks of Mt. Baldy, Mt. San
Jacinto, and Mt. Wilson in southern California - the six-pack of peaks –
three down, three to go!
David and I have other passions that we thought would be
useful for our fellow hiking enthusiasts
I am a research nerd, I research
EVERYTHING, and that kind of preparation has greatly improved our hiking
experience. I comb through my books on
hiking, and scour websites to learn as much about these hikes as I can before
we go. I will share those resources on this blog (Book recommendations and
website links as well as our notes and recommendations about these hikes). I have a good friend who
hikes with us frequently, and is as much of a research geek as I am, she is
incredibly adept at researching and finding names and information about all of
the plants and critters we see, so we will include that information as well wherever we can.
My husband is a photographer, he
has been doing photography for over 35 years, has done it professionally, and
is incredibly talented. Really. I’m not biased, but you can judge for
yourself.
I Googled “hiking” online this morning, and more than 300
million results were returned. I suspect that at least a good portion of those
are hiking blogs, and judging from how many Facebook groups, blogs, and Twitter feeds I follow, I know that this blog is one of thousands (or more) out there. It is my hope that ours will be unique, up-to-date and useful.
I will certainly share those blogs and resources that have been helpful to me. My husband
and I have been doing this now for a while, and I’m going to share what, for
us, has been the most useful information when we hike. Much of this information
will be centered on Southern California, but we will share our hiking
adventures elsewhere as well.
Thank you – and enjoy!
